CCN Marks International Widows’ Day 2026, Calls for Dignity, Justice, and Empowerment for Widows

ABUJA, NIGERIA – June 23, 2026 — The Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) has joined the global community in commemorating the International Widows’ Day 2026, calling for renewed commitment to the dignity, protection, justice, and empowerment of widows across Nigeria and beyond.

In a message issued to mark the annual observance, the General Secretary of the Christian Council of Nigeria, Rt. Rev. Evans Onyemara, Ph.D., emphasized the need for governments, churches, traditional institutions, civil society organizations, and development partners to strengthen support systems for widows and other vulnerable members of society.

International Widows’ Day, observed annually on June 23, serves as a global platform to raise awareness about the challenges faced by widows, including poverty, discrimination, social exclusion, harmful cultural practices, and limited access to economic opportunities.

According to Bishop Onyemara, the occasion provides an opportunity for society to reflect on its responsibility toward widows and to work collectively toward creating a more just and compassionate environment where they can thrive.

“As Christians, we are reminded that God has a special concern for widows and the vulnerable. The Church therefore has both a spiritual and moral obligation to uphold their dignity, defend their rights, and provide practical support that promotes hope and self-reliance,” he said.

The CCN General Secretary paid tribute to widows for their resilience, courage, and invaluable contributions to their families, churches, communities, and the nation despite the challenges many continue to face.

He noted that widows often bear enormous responsibilities while navigating grief, economic hardship, and social pressures, making it imperative for faith communities and policymakers to prioritize their welfare and protection.

The Christian Council of Nigeria further urged churches across the country to establish and strengthen programmes that provide emotional support, economic empowerment, skills development, and social inclusion for widows.

Bishop Onyemara also called for stronger legal and policy frameworks to protect widows from exploitation, discrimination, property dispossession, violence, and other forms of injustice that undermine their dignity and wellbeing.

“As we commemorate International Widows’ Day 2026, let us renew our commitment to building communities where widows are valued, respected, protected, and empowered to reach their full potential,” he stated.

The Council reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for social justice, human dignity, and the welfare of vulnerable groups as part of its broader mission of promoting Christian values and national development.

CCN concluded by encouraging Christians and all people of goodwill to extend compassion, support, and solidarity to widows while working towards a society where no widow is left behind.
