Christian Council of Nigeria & ACT Alliance Bring Hope to Mokwa Flood Survivors

Spread the love

Mokwa, Niger State – In the wake of one of Nigeria’s deadliest floods, the Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) in collaboration with ACT Alliance has delivered critical aid to survivors in Mokwa, Niger State. The catastrophic flooding, triggered by torrential rains and a dam collapse on May 29, 2025, claimed over 500 lives, displaced 3,000+ residents, and destroyed 4,000+ homes. CCN’s rapid response reached 4,000 beneficiaries across 320 households, providing emergency relief to those most vulnerable—women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.

Key Interventions

  • Cash Assistance & Essential Supplies: Distributed cash grants and household items to help families rebuild livelihoods.
  • WASH Services: Provided clean water and sanitation kits to prevent cholera and typhoid outbreaks.
  • Psychosocial Support: Trained local volunteers offered counseling to survivors, including children traumatized by the disaster.
  • Mobile Kitchens: Partnered with UN Women to serve 2,000 daily meals in temporary shelters.

 The Crisis in Numbers

  • 500+ fatalities (revised from earlier estimates of 161).
  • 600+ missing, including 100 children from a single madrasa.
  • 10,000+ hectares of farmland destroyed, worsening food insecurity.
  • Critical infrastructure lost: Collapsed bridges (Mokwa, Eppa) and roads severed access to aid.
